As people appreciate Master Chang's sculptures, they seemingly enter a conversation between human and the universe. The master's awe-inspiring works inadvertently catch the viewers' attention, leading them into the landscape portrayed and enlightening their mind in a split second. As said in the very beginning of the Doctrine of the Mean, "What Heaven has conferred is called Nature; an accordance with this Nature is called the Path of Duty; the regulation of this Path is called Instruction. The Path may not be left for an instant. If it could be left, it would not be the Path." For Master Chang, this Path had not been revealed to him until he was almost 50 years old. Chang started out his career as a professional optometrist, but a dream he had in his late 40s guided him to a drastic career change. In his dream, a heavenly voice guided him to learn sculpting, and he thus began studying and perfecting the art of sculpture, both as the Path of Duty and as a calling sent from above. Later, Chang became the formal student of the prestigious master of Taiwanese modern sculpture, Mr. Yang Yu-yu. Before becoming a formal apprentice, Chang underwent a year of ordeal and succeeded with perseverance. Such serendipity is like a story in ancient mythology, describing how Chang finally met his pre-determined destiny as a great sculptor and preacher of art at the age of 50.
