1993 Awarded to the Ethnic Sculpture Prize

The 2nd Ethnic Sculpture Prize Winning works--THE GRAND RED CLIFF

This work captures the vast expanse of China's natural scenery. Its physical appearance not only invokes the grandness of tall mountains and vast rivers, but exudes a creative energy that shapes the awe-inspiring landscape of the Grand Red Cliff.

The artist uses thousand-year-old stout camphor wood as his artistic medium to design the magnificent scenery of the towering Red Cliff, the raging Yangtze River, and the lushness of the surrounding green pines. The elaborate effect is astonishing. Created through ingenious technique, this work presents itself in a simple, natural and poised way. Its configuration and layout transcend those of traditional wood carving, and lead to the formation of an entirely new genre of wood works. The presentation of spectacular mountains, steep cliff, and rushing river is particularly unique, and truly makes this a great work of art.
